Good grooming is having your shaving kit for men handy at all times. Sounds quaint but if you're the type who needs to shave every day, or keep your beard neat and trim, then you should have a shaving kit with you always. But what really is in a shaving kit?
At its bare bones, the shaving kit has to have a razor, a shaving cream, and an aftershave. Now, there are different razors around but they fall into three kinds: safety razors, cartridge razors, and straight razors.
Safety razors are the ones where a protective device is positioned between the edge of the blade and the skin; there are a variety of safety razors you can choose from, among them are the single edge razor or the double edge razor. Cartridge razors are the disposable ones that come in many variations from single blades to multiple blades, with lubricated strips, and so on. Finally, you have straight razors that also come in many kinds, like the square point or the Dutch point.
As for the other contents of the shaving kit, we all know there's a variety of shaving creams, aftershave lotions, and moisturisers available. Many men see shaving as a ritual that follows the process of shaving or trimming their facial hair. So aside from the basic contents mentioned above, expect to see any of the following: shaving brush, shave oil, shave bowl, razor refills, face wash, and even a towel.
Just like your facial skin care routine, shaving has the following steps:
Preparation - this means you have to prep your skin prior to shaving. The best time to shave is after you shower. That's because the skin has been cleaned already. You need to apply pre-shave oil to coat the skin and act as a barrier between the skin and the blade. Shave oil keeps the skin moisturised while you shave, minimising skin irritation or razor burn, or preventing it altogether.
Lathering - you'll need to lather up your beard using shaving cream that's suited to your skin. This can be done by hand or with a shaving brush. Whichever you use, apply the lather in a circular motion to cause the pores to open or expand, allowing for a closer shave.
Shaving - once you've lathered up, you're ready to shave. For the first pass, it's highly recommended to go with the grain. This will prevent skin irritations. For the second pass, go across or against the grain this time around.
Moisturising - after shaving, rinse off with cold water to close the pores. Apply an aftershave moisturiser like an aftershave cream or balm to help re-condition the skin, keeping it soft, supple, and healthy. Apply the cream or balm using your fingertips in a downward slapping motion to prevent skin irritation. This may come as a surprise but aftershave lotions that are alcohol-based are not advisable as this can cause skin irritation aside from stripping away the moisturiser.
